Using Medicine in Science Fiction: The SF Writer’s Guide to Human Biology
This forum seemed like the best place to post a very useful book for research, Using Medicine in Science Fiction: The SF Writer’s Guide to Human Biology by H. G. Stratmann. (Please let me know if I should repost in books on writing instead). It was recommended by Dr. Mike Brotherton in his online seminar Writing Hard Science Fiction and I’m really impressed with the depth and organization of this book. It is written by an MD and provides a thorough overview of how the body works, what parts of those systems might go wrong in a space setting, and how near-future science might change things. He also notes well-known science fiction stories that have plots based on the science he’s discussing in each chapter, so this book also contains a survey of the genre.
It is published by an academic textbook publisher so it’s expensive but Amazon has an option to rent the ebook. It’s also not grouped properly with writer’s guides so I had never heard of it and wanted to spread the word.
