Audio Drama as a Writing Tool
Audio storytelling has been a bedrock foundation of creating pictures in the minds of readers and listeners everywhere. We’re read stories as children. We listened to stories on records, tapes, CDs, radio, and now on downloads and streaming services.
But you know what’s more powerful than just Audio Fiction?
Audio Drama.
What’s the difference you may ask?
The difference is having George R.R. Martin reading from “The Song of Fire & Ice” on a stage before you (Audio Fiction)
and watching a season of Game of Thrones (Audio Drama)
It’s the difference from “Once upon a time…” to throwing your listeners in the midst of things. It’s immediate. It’s engaging, and it’s a powerful way to find new fans and listeners.
It’s why Audible just released new Harry Potter full-cast audio books.
We want to be entertained, in our cars, on walks, doing boring chores. Engaging our minds with story is what makes everything more interesting.
I’ve been writing and producing Audio Drama for 25 years. I’ve been at the forefront of the Audio Drama movement, helping to shape it and seeing through the initial wave of podiobooks to the audio book podcast, and onwards through four different waves.
I wrote the first audio fan-fiction for Firefly, and gained 28000 listeners during that period. on our podcast in the aughts.
Trust me when I say, Audio Drama is a fantastic way to package your stories, gain a following and help build loyal listeners/readers for your next sales of your book.
Give a thought to trying out #NADSWRIM next week.
And please ask me anything in this incredible medium! <3
