Thoughts on Gail Carriger’s Zoom from a newbie
Hello all, I’m a new member here at Apex Writers. I am leaving my job as a librarian in January to focus on publishing my first novel.
Are there any other new writers here that watched the Gail Carriger’s Zoom last night? What were your thoughts, especially since the webinar was geared towards folks like us?
On the one hand, I am grateful to have learned so much about contracts and rights when publishing the traditional route. I never thought about having a newsletter, and was convinced by the end of her presentation that I should have one on the web no later than the end of January. I have not put five seconds into my appearance as an author, but the idea of having a recognizable look really appeals to me, since I’m hoping my book will inspire the cosplay community as well.
However, I realize I’ve jumped off the deep-end, and worse, I am not working “SMART”. I never wanted to go the self-pub route, and yet after hearing about a 10K dollar royalty mistake, or the fact that advances trickle in, or that they can take your manuscript and then NOT PUBLISH IT and have it in limbo—if I bought into fear I’d be terrified. But I don’t, so instead I’ll consider myself forewarned.
I’m taking a class next month to write my business plan. That plan was not going to even consider the self-pub route. But now? I don’t know. I’m worried if I am in charge of it all, I will mess it up. I think I have what Dave calls a million dollar franchise in my head so I want to get this right.
I would love to know what my fellow community members think.
