Brainstorming Collaborative Grabbers
Summary – I think we should collaborate to build “grabbers” so that we share traffic.
I was thinking about how we’re all trying to figure out how to drive traffic to our sites as I was clearing out my own email subscriptions. FabShopHop promotes online fabric stores by having visitors search the stores for a rabbit graphic. This has been very effective on me personally as a customer, more than just visiting/loading a site to be entered in a giveaway, because the act of searching involves looking at pages containing goods that appeal to me. And my kids have really gotten interested in print-out paper dolls this week. Many are “collaborations” where you have to visit multiple websites to collect all of the outfits that fit the same doll.
This got me wondering if our we could help each other by building some sort of shared content that readers would follow across multiple author websites. Perhaps there is a novelette where each chapter is a page on a different site, and we get a chance to put our sidebar/header in front of readers following it through (would this be a good use of one of Dave’s pieces, as he’s offered?). Like Writer’s Rings, we are going to need to match closely in genre and tone, and we probably want to put backups and rights agreements in place so that the work can be repaired if anyone drops out.
It would be more ambitious, but we could build interactive fiction by giving each author participating a brief writing prompt (Our Hero has chosen Door #2 and so he’s fighting the dragon with a rubber chicken, back up and click Door #3 and go to another author’s site to see what happens when he got a 1996 Honda Civic instead). I think we’d need to match genre, but would require less editing for cohesion than coauthoring, because we would want each segment to show off a different author’s voice.
Would anyone be interested in this? Any other ideas?
