Years ago, I saw a publisher design a beautiful gold embossed font for the cover of an upcoming book that was going to be put out as a “super release.” However, when a bigger author suddenly got that slot, the publisher went ahead and released the book. They did two things to downgrade the book: they darkened the cover, and they gave it a crappy red font that made it look amateurish. It really was a lesson in how to destroy a book, so when you’re thinking about putting out a book, look for a great designer–someone who recognizes the font, the colors, and styles that you might want to print the cover in. For many authors, you might not be looking at creating a physical hardcover, but the printing style as seen on the e-book can still look indistinguishable from a print book. I would budget something like $300 to $500 for this, but might go higher if the designer really floors me.
