Hi all! I was deployed to Iraq in 2002-2003 as a member of the 3rd Infantry Division, the mechanized infantry that crossed the berm into Iraq and started that war (and founded the Green Zone). I was in an overnight quartering party halfway to Fallujah, slept with an M-16, played “Charge” on my trumpet atop a wedge of M-1 Abrams, played Taps inside Saddam’s parade grounds, played spades and rummikub on the roof of the Iraqi Airways catering building while bombs and mortars landed nearby, and did donuts in the desert in an APC. Hi,
So I have a character I am working with who had an experience in Afghanistan that plays into his character development. I have been trying to answer this question and can’t find anything about it: Toward the end of one’s enlistment, can a soldier ask to be stationed somewhere near a gravely ill family member for the last few months of an enlistment period? I have read about several different deferrals but I am wondering if you know if a character could be based at a training center near a grandfather who is gravely ill and needs help getting his farm ready for sale. Any thoughts on this?

Hi Thomas! It’s certainly possible, but there are several factors that can alter the situation. Is there a war going on? an active deployment? is the MOS in high demand? is their location desirable (and therefore difficult to secure a post)? I do remember folks changing duty stations for family reasons, so if I were pressed, I’d say “yes – you can move to be with gravely ill family”.
