  • Looking For SFF Writing Group

Posted by Mark Dame on May 20, 2022 at 7:28 am

    Good morning all.

I’m looking to join or create a small writing group (3-4 people total). I’m currently writing epic fantasy, but I also write sci-fi and horror/thrillers. I’ve self-published two novels and one novella, and while those books are okay, I want to step up my game. A writing group where I can help others work through their books (and hopefully get the same in return) seems like the next logical step.

I was in a larger writing group a few years ago and it didn’t work for me. It was too unfocused, each week there was a slew of submissions unrelated to previous weeks (and the few that were new pieces from previous weeks got lost in chaos), and most of the people were writing in genres I don’t read. After a few months, I gave up on it, thinking that writing groups were for people who just wanted to share their writing with other people, not people who wanted to make a living at writing.

I’ve learned since then that for someone who wants to be a professional writer, a small group is much more beneficial.

For reference, I was watching Brandon Sanderson’s YouTube series from the BYU writing class. In one of the videos he started talking about writing groups and I realized I was missing out on a great tool. It helped me understand why my previous foray into a writing group failed.

    Anyone interested?

Hi Mark, I just joined Apex and saw this post. I’m in the same boat as you and am very interested in joining a small writing group. Let me know if there is space!

I’m very interested, if the group is still open to another member.

There are three of us right now. I’m checking with the other two to see what they think about adding a fourth.

You’ve done the right thing posting here and getting your group together! If you need any help give me a shout. I’ve been/am in several groups, though I’ve let a lot lapse through covid. I’ve really tried to simplify my life writing-wise and not go overboard LOL. 3 to 4 to a group is perfect! Also realize that you may have one or two who must drop out. Life happens. So you will need to replace at times. I usually start with a bit larger number myself, 5 or 6, and let the numbers settle down. Few really understand the commitment and work it takes to make a group work for everyone, not just at their convenience. If you have any questions or just want to discuss it, give me a shout anytime :). Pat

I would be interested in pursuing the same! I’m just starting out on this adventure but I feel I can bring fresh ideas and help brainstorm as necessary! I’m looking for other creative individuals to take part so I am definitely willing to join in!

Thanks for the interest. Our group is full at the moment, but I’ll reach out if we have an opening. We’re keeping it to four members so we we have review everyone’s submissions every week.
