I feel like it’s also important that you aren’t just focusing on the experiences of people of color when you are a white author. I see nothing wrong with having a diverse cast and writing with POC; however, if you are a white author writing about what it’s like to live as a person of color, then it gets closer to crossing the line. I often write in Fantasy and I have characters (sometimes main characters) who are darker-skinned, but the story is not about them having darker skin. That’s just how they came to me. They are complex characters with a background and goals and ambitions and the story does not center on the color of their skin because it doesn’t need to. Having an all-white cast is just unrealistic.
