LFG: New Writing Group Wanted. Shall we create one together?
Hi all! I’ve recently realized that I’m growing out of my current writing group (thanks a lot, Apex! Thanks Dave! Sheesh). I want to start a NEW writing group with like-minded, slightly sane writers who are actively pushing themselves toward improvement and publication, and are self-identified as responsible and passionate/crazy enough to critique a given reasonable section reasonably, and on-time, despite everyday demands (silly things like jobs).
I’m primarily sci-fi (soft, humor, cute xenos, spunky AIs) but my first ever novel was an epic fantasy, and I’m a huge Brandosando fan. Favorite authors and books are Lois McMaster Bujold (Curse of Chalion), Andy Weir (Project Hail Mary), Dan Simmons (Hyperion Cantos), Iain M Banks (Culture series), Alastair Reynolds (House of Suns), and I sure did like The Runelords, written by that one fella.
Note that it’s best that we all work together with the understanding that we may NOT work together well, so if anyone wants to drop out at any time, that is totally fine. However, I want to start small and then branch out by inviting more on a probationary basis.
I’ll be starting a Discord group for us. I have a Zoom professional account that we can use to do writing sprints together as well. Discord access and usage will be required (Discord Nitro is NOT required but I will be sourcing some fun animated emotes, so you may choose to get it in the future).
If you’d like to join, reply with any relevant information you’d like to share, including your current project, genre, future genres, what you like to read, your favorite color, schedule, favorite authors, mother’s maiden name, and the correct color to cross the bridge in Monty Python Holy Grail.

Current project is an adult fantasy novel (which annoyingly always sounds sexual when I say it that way lol) about a group of kids who get lost in the woods trying to prove a mythic local legend known as the Black Beast is real and, after a terrifying encounter with the Beast, witness a duel between two superhumans linked to a centuries-old Shadow War with strong ties to the Beast that not only proves its existence, but that history, as we know it, is a lie.
It’s set in the 90’s and I’ve been told it’s Goonies meets stranger things and narnia
I want to mostly write fantasy thriller type of stories, I’m considering YA and MG as well. May try some Sci Fi and other thriller genres (I’ve got a pretty cool idea about slave ghosts and sea shanties i’m toying with)….
I like to read anything that I can’t put down, but I do more re-reading of my favorites these days as I can’t really devote time to new stories with writing (Harry Potter and LOTR I can always re-read!)
Fun fact – I’m colorblind, but my favorite color is what we in NC call Carolina Blue lol

I’m definitely interested. My project genre is a dark fantasy set in our modern world – sort of Anne Rice meets Harry Potter. I’d like to develop into High Fantasy as well as I’ve enjoyed those stories all my life. My favorite color is orange. Favorite authors include: Mercedes Lackey, Melanie Rawn, and David Eddings. Mother’s maiden name is the same as mine, and of course the answer is “Orange”, unless you are the third person to cross the bridge and I don’t know aviary trivia.

I’ve just enrolled in Apex and, yes, joining a writing group on Discord would be great. I’m already published in other countries, but now it’s time for the big break in the US, so lots of work ahead.

I think Heather’s group was already set up, but if you wanted to be in one with me I wouldn’t mind managing it. I have a zoom account, so we can have a weekly zoom meeting, and I believe I can set up a group page for us here on Apex. If you want to give me an e-mail address I can mail out the zoom link for critique meetings. If everyone wants to e-mail me any work they want to submit to the group for critique then I can compile a single e-mail with the critique requests. We can also discuss what we’re each looking for and how things should be handled during the first zoom meeting. Let me know if you are interested. 😀 My e-mail is decisiveart@hotmail.com

Hi @LeightonSawatzky @fabiombarreto @avadams1967 , I just came across these posts searching for small epic fantasy writing groups. It looks like the group @missbaconhawk started is full(?) but maybe there are enough of us to start another one on a discord channel?
I’m currently doing Dave’s 318R class, but once that finishes (Christmas) I’m keen to find some other writers for something like weekly accountability check-ins plus exchanges of material for critiques – also possibly working through some of the Apex courses together? I’ve been part of a few different online writing groups/sites over the
last ~18 months and aware that there is a bit of trial and error trying
to find people whose styles you match with and who are able to provide
substantive feedback.I’m working on a few different epic/heroic fantasy novels as well as some short stories at the moment while trying to level-up my writing. My main influences include Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen, Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive, Kerr’s Deverry Cycle, Robin Hobb, David Gemmell etc. Let me know what you think?

Hi Zara, I’m also currently doing Dave’s 318R class at the moment. Though I’m mainly working in various sub-genres of Romance, I do have an Epic Fantasy in the works, and would love to find an accountability/critique, and keep working through the Apex courses group.

I’m very interested in a SFF writing group.
I’m signed up for the 318R January class, and have a mixed group working through the Writing Mastery courses.
Before joining an SFF group, I’d like to know what is envisioned for the content of the group?
For example, critique, support, discussion, writer’s craft, etc.

I would be interested as well. Have you started the group already? I am working on a young adult epic sci-fi novel that takes place in a distant planet colonized by travelers from earth. I have also registered for the January 318 session as well.

Hi, it looks like things work a bit differently on here than what I thought from a first look around and from other online sites. It seemed that nothing was very active, but turns out that because the group functionality is a bit limited, all the action is happening on either Facebook or Discord, but we can’t create small group channels on the Apex Discord server, so it would require setting up a separate server. I’m personally not keen on setting-up/managing a separate discord server at the moment and I’m not on Facebook (I’ve been off for ~8 years and hoping to stay off, but will see how that goes for working with this site). Is anyone else interested in setting up (or already have) their own discord server?

Hello! I’m new to Apex and excited to be here. Would love to join a writing group. I have published one mythological novel with another set to be released in the next few months. I’m currently working on the first draft of a fantasy novel.

To anyone interested in a group.
I and 2 other members have a group currently working through Writing Mastery I course – we are 2/3rds of the way through. This group is not specifically speculative fiction, but 2 of the members are writing that. We work through a shared Google folder / google docs.

I’m interested in a Discord group dedicated to speculative (SFF) fiction. If one develops, please keep me posted. The average cruising airspeed velocity of an unladen European Swallow is roughly 11 meters per second, or 24 miles an hour. I would think THAT was the most important answer with all this favorite color bs getting me thrown into the gorge. Not that I have anything against gorges, I’m an all-gorges are OK type person, as long as I’m not the one in them.<div>
I am currently writing an epic fantasy with romantic elements (not a lot of romance but hey, t’s a guy, it’s a girl, things happen.) I also do soft SF and have done some very short horror stories that I have been told would win the “Drollest of Droll” award, should there ever be one. Somehow, I don’t think that’s a good thing but hey, I like awards, they are shiny.
Some of my fave (current) authors are Jennifer Roberson, Robin Hobb, Matt Hague, V. E. Schwabb, Jack Campbell, Diana Gabaldon, Jeffrey Carver, James S. A. Corey, Jodi Taylor, as well as the classics: James Blish, Robert Silverberg, Heinlein, Asimov, Bradbury, Clifford D. Simak, Philip Jose Farmer, Frank Herbert, and on and on.
MY favorite color is RED. Always red. Like blood. Like lots of blood. But it won’t get me across the bridge. I do like trolls. If you feed them right, they will be your best friend and attack your enemies in their beds at night.
TV shows I really like are Outlander, The Expanse, Dexter, Yellowstone, 1883, and lots of British mysteries and all kinds of stuff.
I enjoy earth-lit walks on the moon, surfing the sands of Mars, and snorting the Oort cloud.
