Branding vs Packaging vs Image (Advice)
Branding vs Packaging vs Image (Advice)
There are three different term in the advertising industry terms you should know.
Package/ing: The message you craft for your audience. This is what you “want” them to know: That you tell great stories that will stay in their heart forever. That you are an expert in whatever field you write about. That your personal life is like their personal life. That every penny they spend on your projects is a great value. That you are worth their time and admiration. This requires a dedicated campaign to tell the world what they should expect. For authors, this means book covers, titles, products, advertising, appearances, etc. This can also refer to the packaging of individual projects. Each book/play/screenplay you create can be packaged differently (and should be).
Image/ing: How the public perceives you/your project. This includes: reviews, word of mouth, praise, scandals, social media, personal interactions, mistaken identity, troll campaigns, ad infinitum. Managing one’s image is a completely separate campaign from packaging.
Brand/ing: The totality of how the public reacts to you/your project. This includes all packaging and image.
(FYI: in corporate speak, Packaging and Branding are both nouns and verbs. Shrug.)
