Joshua Essoe is a freelance editor who offers editing services from his webpage. He gave me a low-ball quote, gave me no written contract, spent the entire budget, then demanded more money to complete job.
• All correspondence (before I hired him) revolved around word count. After all the drama happened, he changed his correspondence to page count.
• He asked for a writing sample so he could quote me a price for editing.
• He agreed to edit the manuscript, and quoted me a price, with a range of $500.
• He never returned the sample edit, so I could see what his editing style was.
• He DID NOT supply a written contract.
• I paid his invoice (i/2 the agreed amount) by check.
• He supplied a timing deadline where he would work on my manuscript, five months into the future.
• He got sick at a con, and started my work late.
• He emailed me and said another piece of work had come in that was a rush and asked if he could put bump me and work on that (I agreed, not wanting to lose my deposit) then he would get back to my manuscript
• Six weeks later, (over a month after his promised completion date) he contacts me and tells me he’d spent up to the low-end of his quoted price, but had only completed editing 60% of my manuscript.
• This is when he started using the term “page count” rather than “word count.” (as you know, 100,000 words do not fit in 400 pages)
• He insisted I pay an additional 25% before he finish his editing.
• I repeat, he DID NOT supply a written contract. Everything he did was verbal.
• I told him to quit working on my manuscript.
• He kept emailing me, insisting if he got more money from me, he would finish the additional pages (page count again, not word count.)
• I said no.
• He finally agreed to “scale back on his edits” to finish, but only do content editing. Not what we had agreed on, not what I had paid forJoshua Essoe had a recommendation from David. That’s one of the reasons I trusted him. Joshua was also the first editor I’d hired, and was I was naive. I now know better.
