What Members Are Saying
David Farland’s writing courses gave me the tools to build my writing
career. I wrote the first chapter of *The Brass Queen* as a worldbuilding
exercise in the *Story Puzzle* class. Dave’s kind words of encouragement
inspired me to expand that exercise into an entire novel. As I worked
through Dave’s courses, I learned how to create unforgettable characters,
thrilling plotlines, and emotionally resonant themes. I also gained an
insider’s perspective of the publishing industry that helped me to become a
traditionally published author. Dave shared the tools to build my rocket
ship and pointed me toward the stars. I couldn't have wished for a better
launch!

Apex is a community of writers dedicated to publishing. I can’t explain how badly I needed this. As an aspiring author, there is a glut of gurus out there pointing in every direction based on what has worked for them or misinterpreting what they think worked for others. David leads a group of pros who not only know the many ways to succeed, but are happy to explain the hows and whys the different ways that work for different writers. And the personal support and relationships I’m building with like-minded people is incalculably important to my career.

Apex Writers is unlike any writers group I’ve belonged to. Between the fantastic library of workshops and Dave Farland’s multi-weekly live sessions, my writing game is continually improving. I find the group’s dynamic a great mix of friendly professionalism that’s perfect.

After spending several years reading writing books and gleaning what I could from free writing resources online, I learned enough to get two honorable mentions from Writers of the Future for my short stories. But I was still lost on how to complete my novel. David Farland's online courses have been invaluable in teaching me the techniques and mental processes needed to craft an entire novel. And the wonderful APEX members in my study group are both inspiring and helpful! If you find yourself in need of a boost to take your writing to the next level, APEX is a great place to start.

Dave leads a group of writers of all levels, with none of misinformation found in so many other groups. His courses are pivotal for the writer looking to up his/ her writing. Dave brings access to a series of pro’s and talent unfound anywhere else. The talent and sharing in this group is outstanding. If your looking for a tribe, this is it.

Apex has transformed the way I look at my writing. I am surrounded by writers with goals and dreams as big as mine. We learn together, we write together, and we encourage each other. Not only do we have access to Dave Wolverton, but he also brings us access to others who can help us fill our gaps about both writing tradecraft and the writing business. Apex is THE game changer.

Practice meets theory in a perfect blend--that’s Dave Farland in a nutshell. If you want to learn to write genre fiction, and make a living at it, then you should be learning from a guy who has done, and is still doing, just that. Dave kills it.
As a former University lecturer, I was hired to teach because, not only did I have the right academic credentials, but I also had real world experience that graduate students needed. Dave draws on decades of experience as an award winning and NYT best selling writer, a movie green lighter for Hollywood, work in video games, and oh yeah, he’s taught more New York Times Best Selling Authors than any other teacher.
I discovered Dave through his work on his Rune Lords series. I loved his originality, and hadn’t read a truly unique take on Epic Fantasy in decades (his creation of forcibles was just awesome). When I began reading his books it happened that I was transitioning to my second career—at 40 I decided to try writing full time (I’d dabbled for many years). I took a university course on creative writing, and though useful, there was just too much literary focus for my goals. I wanted to write SF & Fantasy.
I knew I needed to learn from an expert in the genre I wanted to write in, and not from a literary expert (though I respect that genre and those works). I had no idea Dave taught creative writing at the time, I was just out searching for a course when I stumbled on to his Story Doctor site and recognized his name. It was one of those moments in life I’ll remember forever. That was an inflection point in my new career. It was the day I set out on the right path to success.
As a former distance education teacher, my expectations of personal time from Dave were low. I know what’s involved teaching people, and the time you can allot per person. Boy, was I in for a surprise! Not only does he make himself available for several conference calls per week, he also records them all, so there are countless hours of previous sessions a student has access to—what a goldmine!
