Spanky Ward – presentation today – Discussion?
I found Spanky refreshing and honest about his work and the industry. He reminds me of a lot of Canadian low-budget producers. If you’re in a ‘production hub’ like LA (or, in Canada, Vancouver, or Toronto), you have resources that you don’t in Utah, Alberta, Saskatchewan, etcetera. But OTOH, you also have the opportunity to develop and create for less $$, to start a career doing low-to-no budgets. It’s a valid way to work. The very first feature I worked on (eons ago) was a small Alberta movie, done by a guy on his Visa. For years afterward, the producer went to Film Festivals and gave presentations on how to make a film on your credit card. It wasn’t a good film but it gave many of us the experience to move into the industry in Vancouver or Toronto. I’m happy I did it and advise students to do these if they can once or so, but at a certain point in your career, you need to be paid.
