Hope you were all as excited as I was to hear from Kraig Wenman! He’s an amazing success story in screenwriting. Most of what he said, I agree with. I do think, though, that there is a place for some screenwriting contests other than fellowships. For one thing, once you’ve earned a little from pro screen or tv writing, you can’t apply to a lot of the entry-level fellowships. Also, I was encouraged by his work ethic. For him, it was hard work and paying attention to the markets that helped him succeed. His tips on screenplay length were also great – fantasy no longer than 105 pages, for example, comedy is good at 90. Even 15 years ago, people were reading 120-page scripts, now they don’t like them. He recco’ed http://www.inktip.com which I’ve since joined. It looks good for the pro writer – not so good if your primary interest (as many on here have) is to turn your fantasy novel (or novels) into screenplays. Inktip has a lot of mid-level to lower level producers who are looking for specific things. If you write Christmas romances, for example, they are often looking for them & I know one local producer who advertises through inktip. They usually pay union rates, too, so this is nothing to sneeze at. I really appreciated the time and information that Kraig provided us.
