Just seen this, and I thought I’d offer my input. This is how I’ve done it:

1) Create something that readers will want. For me this was a short story as a prequel to one series, a novel as a prequel to another. This is commonly known as a ‘reader magnet’.

Here are the steps I followed:

1) I wrote a prequel “reader magnet” for my fantasy series. It is a short story of approximately 8k words. I had a cover made and then I formatted the story with Vellum to create mobi and epub files.

2) I created a website with WordPress and set up an author email.

You don’t anything ANY special software.

We collect names on everything from napkins to Excel spreadsheets.

Ultimately, you will just need a simple text file for any word processing app or spreadsheet and put every email address on a separate line. Like so:

dave@gmail.com
darla@hotmail.com
eve@eve.com
etc@etcetera.com
